Yet again, I have more questions about life in the Hebrides--I'm sure these seem quite basic to you that live there, but I'm doing my best to make my character's experience on her fictional island seem authentic. I'm wondering about cell phone service/reception--are cell phones usable in the Hebrides? What about regular land-line telephones? (My character gets in trouble, and I need to know if she'd be able to call anyone for help..)
Also, is electrical power widely available and affordable? If not, what is used? How are homes generally heated?
Again, my apologies if these seem like 'Silly American' questions, but I do hope for answers!
Thank you so much for any help you provide,
-Lynn
By the way, I live in Colorado, and if anyone would like to visit, I'd love to show you around!

thank you, Moira by: Anonymous
Hi Moira,
thank you so much for responding--I really really appreciate that. I do have a few questions--actually several, but I'll keep it short for now. I think of the Hebrides as having a lot of sheep roaming around--is that true? The more I think about it I wonder if there is enough grass to sustain them. I'm asking because my character is about to arrive in the Hebrides, and her hosts will provide a welcome meal, and I want to get the menu correct. Would a meal for important guests involve mutton? Or would fish be more appropriate?
Also, when do midges begin coming out, and how much of a problem are they really?
I hope everything in your life is going well, and thank you so much--I'm happy to reciprocate if you are at all curious about Colorado.

Hebridean food questions by: US Author
Hello,
Well, my book is beyond the first 50 pages now, and my main character had arrived in the Hebrides. I'm hoping someone out there can help me with some ideas about food: what would be a normal 'welcoming' dinner menu? I'm going to guess that fruits and some vegetables are hard to come by, but please tell me if I am wrong. What meats are eaten in the hebrides? cheeses? Any description of common dishes would be much appreciated. Are there "kid-food" items? In the States, we tend to classify some foods like macaroni and cheese, peanut butter, some prepackaged candy/snack things as "kid-food". Is it the same in the Hebrides or does everyone eat the same type of thing? Of course...there are plenty of US adults, myself included that still like certain kid foods!
I so wish I could visit the Hebrides and do this research myself, but until that's possible, I really appreciate any help anyone can give me!
